The A Case Number Is Still a Human Being Hoodie was created around one question:

WHO IS SAFE?

The front asks what happens when fear comes to our streets—and who gets protected.

The back takes that question into the immigration court system, where millions of cases are moving through a process filled with legal filings, deadlines, hearings, orders, and decisions.

The artwork intentionally places case files on one side of the scale and a home, shoes, and a butterfly on the other.

Because a person is never just a case file.

THE FACTS ARE PART OF THE DESIGN.

This isn’t a fictional statistic printed on a shirt for shock value.

The numbers on the back are based on August 2026 immigration-court data.

According to TRAC Immigration’s analysis of EOIR court records:

77,234
immigrants were ordered removed by immigration judges in August 2026.

89.7%
of completed Immigration Court cases that month ended with either a removal order or voluntary departure.

24.2%
of people whose cases resulted in a removal order had an attorney assisting them.

3,092,988
active cases were pending before Immigration Court at the end of August 2026. 

These numbers describe Immigration Court proceedings and court orders. They aren’t a count of every physical removal carried out by ICE, which is why the distinction matters.
